I also learned that the journey is as much about patience with myself as it is with her. Because teaching a dog something as instinctual as where to go is frustratingly unnatural. But it works. Slowly. Messily. And sometimes, beautifully.

Nothing quite compares to Mila’s relationship with the robot vacuum. It’s not fear—it’s hatred. The moment that little Roomba whirs to life, Mila springs into action like a furry war general.

Life with three dogs is like living in a sitcom where no one knows they’re in a sitcom. Every bark is a punchline. Every tail wag is a truce. But at the end of it all, they curl up next to me, forming a pile of warmth, snoring, and drool. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Every time I say “stay” to my dog, I hear a little echo in my own mind: “Stay here. Stay now. Stay present.” Maybe it’s not just a command we give our dogs. Maybe it’s a quiet invitation to our selves. To stop chasing the next thing. To stop fearing we’re behind. To pause. Breathe. Be.
