Personality

The Newfoundland is basically a living teddy bear who moonlights as a professional lifeguard. Imagine a bear-sized dog with the soul of a monk and the strength of a Viking who just wants to nap in your lap (whether you’re ready or not). They're calm, caring, and impossibly fluffy—and yes, they drool like it’s an Olympic sport.

This gentle giant thrives around children and water, often trying to “rescue” swimming humans—even if they’re just doing laps. They’re not big barkers, but they’ll lean on you like a 150-pound therapy sponge and give the warmest stink-eyed glances when you dare leave the room.

They require space (your couch doesn’t count), brushing (lots of it), and towel duty (drool patrol is real). But in return, you get a canine companion with the heart of a saint, the loyalty of a knight, and the slobber capacity of a malfunctioning sprinkler.

Newfoundlands are enormous, affectionate, and famously gentle—especially with children. Their calm energy, social nature, and love of water make them ideal for families with space and time for grooming. Though not great watchdogs, they’re excellent companions and natural-born rescuers.

A photograph features a Newfoundland dog dressed as a lifeguard, wearing a red cap and rescue vest with a towel draped over its shoulder, holding a bright yellow rescue float on a beach at sunset with a lighthouse in the background.
